Merging HVAC and Lighting Control for Cost-Effective Green Buildings
Louis-Nicolas HamerBroadcast Date: Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

HVAC accounts for a significant portion of the energy consumption of commercial buildings. Building automation systems (BAS) allow for the remote control of HVAC, lighting and other applications, in turn maximizing occupant comfort while typically reducing energy consumption by 15-30% (it can go as high as 50%). However, there has been a traditional split in the BAS industry between HVAC and lighting controls, despite the fact that both types of equipment can be found next to each other in any room of any given building.

In this presentation, Louis-Nicolas Hamer will discuss new technology today that is bridging the gap between HVAC and lighting, providing better payback for energy efficiency projects. Join him in exploring this topic and engaging in a discussion surrounding the building industry. A live Q&A portion will be conducted at the end of the presentation where attendees may interact with the speaker.

The facilities world is undergoing a profound transformation. New buildings are being delivered in less time and significantly under budget largely because of Building Information Modeling (BIM). Analysis tools for energy and LEED are now available that use the information in the model instead of having to load data for each tool separately. The model is more valuable because it contains all the information about the buildings in one organized place and can be delivered to the Facility Owner. While all these capabilities can be realized, they are not yet fully implemented. There are still far too many stovepipes where information is created and not made available to others. Implementing standards will go a long way to improve this.

You have an opportunity to determine just how “Green” the National BIM Standard (NBIMS-US™) will be. If it is your desire that green be integrated into NBIMS-US in a way that all the sustainable issues are included such as energy, water, raw materials, product information, and operations and maintenance life cycle costs, then get involved. The bottom line is, wherever the facility will end up, in a landfill or re-manufactured into another facility, it is up to you. This session will outline how you can make a difference for future generations.

The green product race is on. Every day, new products hit the market claiming to be green. Exhibit floors across the country are being invaded by companies showcasing their latest green innovation. Unfortunately, many of those products are, relatively speaking, old news. Many of the biggest sustainable design conferences and expositions in 2009, and so far in 2010, have lacked anything truly new and astounding. Where, then, are the products just barely rolling off the production line? Those just waiting to be launched? Those still in research and development?

The most effective way to be in the know is to build a green network. This is also the most important part of building a green library. When you have access to artists, manufacturers, researchers, and information providers who have within their reach the latest material intelligence, specifiers themselves can become part of the creation process and be in a position to design new and proprietary products. This session will showcase some of the newest green materials released, suggest strategies for ferreting the most innovative R&D and finding leading-edge sustainable material manufacturers, and provide tips for how to work with these companies to develop materials as of yet unimagined.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify cutting edge environmentally friendly materials that are not yet mainstream green.
  2. Review research strategies for finding the companies researching and developing these materials.
  3. Explore tips for working with small, progressive, environmentally responsible product manufacturers to create innovative materials.

Continuous Greening – Retrofits and Facility Management
Written by Green Building Pro Staff
Broadcast Date: Wednesday, October 20, 2010
Time: 10:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM ET
Duration: 50-55 Minutes

Existing buildings outnumber new construction 99 to 1 and all buildings account for nearly 40% of U.S. energy use and carbon emissions. Targeted strategies for greening operations during retrofits are increasingly possible and will be generically reviewed.  Sustainability, however, is not a one-time action, but requires a continuous cycle in facility management and occupant education that is good for the environment and good for the bottom line.  Achieving continuous greening is presented in the framework of current metric systems.

Daylighting - The Foundation of a Sustainable School

Daylighting is the foundation of a sustainable school.  This practice, which admits the controlled light of the sun and sky into occupied spaces and supplements with appropriate electrical illumination, can save up to 60% of the typical school electricity bill. Daylighting has also been shown to improve the learning environment and contribute to higher student test scores and satisfaction on the part of both students and teachers. When incorporated in integrated design strategies it adds very little incremental cost.

The top strategies for designing daylighting include proper orientation and shading of openings, lighting surfaces in rooms to reduce glare requirements for high concentrations of electric fill light, and coordination of electric lighting design. In addition to the daylighting strategy itself, integration of openings into ventilation and building envelope decisions as well as reduction in the waste heat of electric lighting can contribute to additional energy savings. Given that schools are predominantly daytime uses, daylighting is the natural place to start a sustainable design.

Greg Kats will discuss his study, Greening Our Built World: Costs, Benefits, and Strategies, as well as introduce his work, Green Buildings and Communities: Costs and Benefits. Based on findings in the 2006 study, Mr. Kats will demonstrate that the total fiscal benefits of green schools can be twenty times as great as the initial cost. Schools can save money while reaping the benefits of high performance buildings, from improved test scores to a lower carbon footprint.

Henry Kelly, the president of the American Federation of Scientists wrote: “This carefully documented study conclusively demonstrates the financial, environmental, and other benefits of using green technologies in schools. In fact, failure to invest in green technologies is not financially responsible for school systems.”

Existing school buildings present major opportunities to create high performance facilities for all students. Learn about tools available to assess and improve your existing schools, including the new Operations Report Card (ORC), a web-based program that guides school staff on how to conduct yearly assessments in energy, air quality, thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics. Schools can use the ORC to benchmark the performance of both high- and low-performance schools and to get recommendations for improvement.  You'll also hear from CHPS staff about top strategies for successful modernizations and how to meet tough prerequisites within a small project scope.
